General tips for using large lures in brackish water:
- Rinse thoroughly: Always rinse your lures with fresh water after every use to remove salt, which will extend their life and prevent corrosion (I always say it but never do myself)
- Match the hatch: Pay attention to the size and type of baitfish in the area and select a lure that imitates them to increase your chances of success.
- Vary your retrieve: For topwater lures, try a “walk-the-dog” action with short twitches and pauses.
- Target cover: Large lures are particularly effective when fished near structure, such as submerged timber, weed beds, and mangrove roots, as they can attract a variety of predatory fish. I will most often fish exactly where it gets tangled, and will lose baits but that’s where the fish is!
